As part of his PhD on the spatial distributional effects of the climate transition, Yashvant Premchand, together with Peter Mulder, mapped out the costs and benefits of housing construction in climate-risked areas.

Their research shows that this debate requires more nuance than is often assumed. It is not simply a choice between building in “safe” or “unsafe” areas. Densification in existing cities can actually create social prosperity – prosperity that is needed to invest in climate adaptation.

By explicitly bringing together economic benefits, climate risks and adaptation costs, Premchand and Mulder are developing a clear and transparent framework for spatial choices. This is precisely what is needed at a time when both space and public resources are scarce.

For NL AAA–Climate Resilient Yashvant Premchand wrote an accessible article about this research. Read te full article (in Dutch) >>>
